This photo shows my photo reference on the left, and the real candy cane in the center.  I hope you enjoy the images, and video.  Thank you so much for stopping by.  The materials are down below.

I am still trying to work out how we can do real draw / color-alongs.  I have no idea how to live stream yet...  I intend to do one live stream a month so we can actually draw / Color together.   For now I will post a Draw along "prep" video and   post photos / materials here.  Then Once finished with the drawing I will add a short and long version on youtube.

**With wanting to make my drawing look real as possible I was really trying to get as many highlights and shadows as possible.  I did re-take these photos, in brighter lighting with an ott lite. I may have a real candy cane in front of me as well.

Step 1: Choose a photo you like the best, or take one of your own.  Take a screen shot, download, or print one of these photo references for drawing.   ** I took all these photos, and you can feel free to sell your finished artwork / prints whether you change details or not.  I am giving you several photo options every draw along we do.

Step 2: Gather your materials. You can get the same as I am using, or you can use you own method of finding the colors you like. I am listing the colors I intend to use below.

Step 3: Sketch / draw your reference on the paper you want to use.  Make sure the sketch is very light so it won't show through the colored pencils.

Step 4: Follow along with the candy cane draw with me video.

Since I am just learning myself I will only be sharing what I am trying.  You may have other techniques.  Feel free to share ideas, questions etc. in the comments on you tube, to help make these projects more fun / engaging.  I will be doing a red and white candy cane.  If you do the mint chip, you will want to swatch out the extra colors you will need.

Materials:

Paper: Strathmore Colored Pencil

Mona Lisa Odorless Mineral Spirits

Small Paint Brush

Kneaded Eraser

It may be helpful to have a real candy cane as a reference for color, and getting a better idea of depth and form.  I will be working primarily off a photo or a red and white cane.

Pencil Sharpener

Prismacolor Premiere:
Here are the color numbers I intend to use
1034, 922, 923, 1032, 924, 925, 937, 928, 1018, 1020, 1072, 1056, 1019, 1029, 1017, 1023, 1050, 938, 1095, 1078, 1033, 918, 914

Optional Luminance 001 - white

If I add any other materials I will update this post.

The photos appear darker here than when I blow them up on my computer.  feel free to adjust of brighten them if you like.   You can take your own photos if you prefer.

The first couple of draw with me videos may just be long videos.  But I fully intend to live stream at least a portion on them in the future.  I think a 1 - 2 hour live stream once a month or twice a month

Please make suggestions in the comment section of the pre - draw with me video.  Is it better to do a voice over - long video, or schedule a live stream one week from the pre - draw with me video posting.

Since there are so many different photos to choose from, I would suggest sketching your candy cane before we do the video, so we can get straight to coloring.   When the draw with me video goes live.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post.  Hope you enjoy!
